Are you algorithms filling your feeds with collagen, creatine and protein supplements? If you are trying to make sense of nutritional supplements and figure out what you really need (if any at all!), then I have the lowdown on what these nutritional supplements can (and can’t) do for you.
There’s no magic bullet and a lot of what we read online is often hyped up with marketing spin. It is worth remembering that the advice we see online is not always written by a someone with an understanding of the intricacies of nutrition and all its interactions.
Supplements do what they say on the tin – they supplement what you are already doing through your diet. They are not designed as a replacement. In other words, you can’t eat a rubbish diet, pop a few pills and assume you’ll reap the benefits. Always start with your diet – think food first before you start to spend your hard earned pocket money on nutritional supplements.
On that note, you do tend to get what you pay for, so cheaper supplements usually contain a lot of fillers and unnecessary excipients, and sometimes even sugar or sweeteners, so read the ingredients list. You probably don’t eat ultra processed foods, so why would you add ultra processed supplements to the mix?
